This historic site, about five miles north of the City of Atchison, is where the Lewis & Clark expedition camped on July 4, 1804. A pedestrian bridge over Independence Creek serves as a link on a 5-mile hiking/biking trail from the Atchison Riverfront. Other features include an interpretive sign, geodetic marker and a replica of a Kanza Indian Earthlodge dwelling. Lewis and Clark wrote in their journals that they camped near an uninhabited village of the Kanza Indians. The Kanza Earthlodge, trail and Lewis & Clark attractions on the Atchison Riverfront were named one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas History in 2010.
The historic site is found along the Glacial Hills Scenic Byway. This beautiful byway gets its name from the rolling hills and rock-strewn valleys carved by ancient glaciers.
Independence Park Missouri River Riverfront Park is anchored by an impressive veterans memorial to the south and river-accessible docks and boat ramp to the north.

Welcome to Jackson Park! It’s a notorious haunt for an unhappy ghost named Molly. Legend has it that she was once a slave whose master showed her fondness. The local women didn’t like this — and lynched her in this tree as punishment for her “seduction” of the unnamed man.
An updated version of the story paints Molly as a teenager who drove out to this secluded area for some “private time” with her boyfriend. However, they ended up fighting, and the boyfriend ditched her here in this park. In a fit of despair, this Molly hung herself from the tree. Whichever version is closer to truth remains a mystery, but there have been numerous sightings of her spectral form here.
